Producing reliable working detection canines involves overcoming a range of challenges. Our detection training program will show you how to overcome many of the most common challenges faced in detection training.
Course Topics Include:
✦ Classical and Operant Conditioning and how they apply to detection training.
✦ Improving Communication: through training in drive using markers.
✦ Imprinting Target Odors: defining what the target is and what it is not
✦ Scent Discrimination and Masking: Dogs must be trained to discriminate between target scents and non-target scents, which can be complicated when odors are masked by other smells or when the environment contains a multitude of distracting scents.
✦ Environmental Variables: learning to maintain focus and effectiveness regardless of distractions, weather conditions, and unfamiliar territories.
✦ Handler Training and Communication: learning to lead without interfering.
✦ Maintaining Drive and Motivation: Keeping a working dog motivated and maintaining its drive without causing burnout or stress is a delicate balance.
✦ Health and Welfare: Ensuring the physical and mental health of a working dog is paramount.
The goal of this course is to ensure that you leave with the knowledge required to train and improve your detection canines and that they are effective in their work.
